Casa Cordovil
History
Evora is a museum-city, whose roots go back to Roman times, and reached its golden age in the 15th century, when it became the residence of the Portuguese Kings.
The historic center of Evora, capital of the Alentejo Province, has been shaped by more than twenty centuries of historic, going as far as the Celtic times. It fell under the Roman domination and still retains the ruins of a Roman Temple. Then, until 1165, the Moorish were here and left many improvements. From the Medieval period we have lots of imponent buildings, like the Cathedral, convents, and many churches, which are characterized by the Manueline style, as our Casa Cordovil.
Since 1922, Casa Cordovil is classified as “Property of Public Interest” just like the fountain in the front, known as “Fonte da Porta de Moura”, and since 1986 is considered by UNESCO “World Heritage Monument”.
The lookout made of granite and marble make this sixteenth-century house a good example of civil architecture from the Manueline period with Moorish influence which is so characteristic of the city of Evora.
Casa Cordovil was used by many generations of the Cordovil family, until nowadays.
The present
Casa Cordovil recently underwent extensive renovation, preserving the character and originality that make it unique and providing all the comforts necessary for its use as a local lodging.
It has two comfortable bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two single beds, three bathrooms, a dining room, a spacious living room with a dome and painted ceiling, and a kitchen. It has three distinct outdoor spaces, all unique and special, where you can enjoy magnificent views of the city and surrounding countryside, as well as cool off in the outdoor shower and relax on the lounge chairs. The living room has two sofa beds, accommodating up to six people. The bedrooms and living room are air-conditioned, and in winter, you can use the wood-burning stove.
The house is accessed via external stairs made of Alentejo granite, and on the lower floor, there is a pleasant terrace where you can enjoy breakfast or order a craft beer.
